Deciding to run for public office is a serious and deeply personal decision. It carries a significant impact not only on the candidate but also on their family. It is not a decision to be taken lightly. After thoughtful consideration, I am announcing my candidacy for State Senator representing District 3, which includes the City of New Orleans and St. Bernard Parish.
As a former State Senator with over two decades of legislative experience, I understand the demands of this role and the urgency it requires. The upcoming legislative session will present critical decisions from day one. There will be no time for on-the-job training. The people of District 3 deserve a senator who is prepared to lead immediately.
One of the first major votes will address the newly drawn Congressional Districts for the State of Louisiana. Having previously voted on at least six different reapportionment and redistricting proposals, I bring the experience and institutional knowledge needed to navigate this complex process.
I have also served as a Member of the State Bond Commission and was the first African American in Louisiana’s history to chair a major revenue committee in the State Legislature. I understand the appropriations process in Baton Rouge, and I know how to bring vital funding back home because I have done it before. As a floor leader, I fought to direct resources to our communities, and I will do so again with the same tenacity and commitment.
My legislative record includes authoring and passing bills that led to the development of major infrastructure and economic assets, including the New Orleans Sports Arena, the Saints training facility, Six Flags Jazzland, Joe Brown Swimming Pool, fifty acres of land for SUNO’s North Campus, and the land and buildings for the New Orleans East Business Park.
I am also a homeowner and small business owner. I know firsthand that the cost of insurance is too high, and I will continue fighting for real solutions to lower those costs for working families and business owners alike.
This is not the time for inexperience. District 3 needs a proven leader who understands the challenges, knows how to deliver results, and has a history of doing just that. I am asking for your vote and your trust to return to the Legislature and continue the work of building a stronger, safer, and more prosperous future for all of us in District 3. Vote Jon Johnson State Senator.
